Intervals in rotation

Cheat sheet
IntervalsCount letters first, then fix the accidental. A third is always three letter names up (D♭–E♭–F), so the major third of D♭ is F, never E♯.
TransposingFind the note's scale degree in the old key, then take the same degree in the new key. F♯ is 3 in D major, so in B♭ major it's D.
Perfect pitchNaming a note with no reference. Start with two or three notes in rotation and add one when they feel solid. Notes come from three octaves, so you can't just measure from the last one. With singing on, it flips: you see a name and sing it cold.
TritoneSix half steps, exactly half an octave. It's spelled as an augmented fourth or a diminished fifth, whichever is cleaner.

The ratios are just intonation, the whole-number frequency ratios Pythagoras heard in a divided string. A piano's equal temperament rounds them all to powers of the twelfth root of 2.
